Lyrically Speaking

Couple songs I’m (re)loving…

Definitely my favorite R.E.M. song, easily in my top 5 favorite songs of all time (so far – always gotta leave room for that).

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.

The photograph on the dashboard, taken years ago,
Turned around backwards so the windshield shows.
Every streetlight reveals the picture in reverse.
Still, it’s so much clearer.
I forgot my shirt at the waters edge.
The moon is low tonight.

Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.
I’m not sure all these people understand.
It’s not like years ago,
The fear of getting caught,
Of recklessness in water.
They cannot see me naked.
These things, they go away,
Replaced by everyday.

Nightswimming, remembering that night.
Septembers coming soon.
I’m pining for the moon.
And what if there were two,
Side by side in orbit,
Around the fairest sun?
That bright, tight forever drum
Could not describe nightswimming.

You, I thought I knew you.
You I cannot judge.
You, I thought you knew me,
This one laughing quietly
Underneath my breath.
Nightswimming.

The photograph reflects,
Every streetlight a reminder.
Nightswimming deserves a quiet night.
Deserves a quiet night.

Nightswimming, R.E.M.

Tonight I am heading up to Fort Collins to see Sean Kelly, former lead singer of The Samples, beloved Colorado-based band that fills my heart with nostalgia. I am really looking forward to escaping into the music for a night.

(Try to forgive the scary redheaded chick in this video…it was the early 90s)

With my hands
I will build you
Castles in the sand
And the promise of a land
That it will keep you
From the weight of the world

They all ran away
on our horses
Leaving nothing to be found
They dug our dreams up from the ground
And took our forces
From the weight of the world
From the weight of the world

Was life too heavy
Will you be free
You may never get older
It no longer hangs over
So let go of
The weight of the world
The weight of the world

Can I please have one more dance with you
Good-bye all I’ve loved, and held, and knew

With my hands
I will build you
Castles in the sand
And the promise of a land
That it will keep you
From the weight of the world

From the weight of the world
From the weight of the world
It’s so far away
From the weight of the world
It’s so far away

From the weight of the world
From the weight of the world

Weight of the World, The Samples
